George Russell secured the quickest time in the first free practice session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His lap of 1m45.387s proved unchallengeable, placing him ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Russell's strong performance positioned Mercedes at the forefront early in the race weekend.

Antonelli's Session Cut Short by Hydraulic Failure

Championship contender Kimi Antonelli experienced a premature end to his practice session. After initially leading the timesheets with a 1m46.265s lap, Antonelli's Mercedes W17 encountered a suspected hydraulic failure at Turn 7, forcing him to stop. This incident led to a virtual safety car and deprived Antonelli of valuable track time.

Verstappen and Leclerc Challenge for Top Positions

Max Verstappen initially showed strong form, setting a 1m46.512s lap despite reporting brake issues. After Antonelli's incident, Verstappen improved his time to 1m45.787s on soft tires. Charles Leclerc also demonstrated competitive pace, finishing just 0.004 seconds behind Verstappen, securing third place overall.
